Horological Society of Utah and AWCI Bring Mobile Watchmaking to Salt Lake City!

Updated: May 30

Watchmaking components and materials

The Horological Society of Utah (HS-U) is thrilled to announce a unique opportunity in conjunction with the esteemed American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) to bring an incredible, hands-on "Build a Watch" event right to our vibrant city on June 13th, 2025!

This isn't just an opportunity to learn about watches; it's a chance to create one yourself, guided by the experts. Imagine assembling a mechanical timepiece from the ground up, understanding the intricate dance of gears and springs, and walking away with a working watch that you personally constructed.

Who is the AWCI?

The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) is the leading not-for-profit trade association in the United States. For over 65 years, AWCI has served as a vital resource for watchmakers, clockmakers, and the public, offering a comprehensive range of services including education, certification, technical assistance, and business support.

AWCI was organized in 1960 as the American Watchmakers Institute (AWI), later changing to the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI). This was the nation's first unified horological organization. Partnering with other organizations around the country, affiliate chapters include the Horological Society of New York and the Horological Society of Utah.

They are committed to setting high standards of workmanship and professional ethics within the industry, providing critical training, publishing the monthly Horological Times magazine, and connecting consumers with qualified repair professionals through their extensive member directory.

Launched in April 2019, the AWCI's mobile Build a Watch program is a fantastic initiative designed to introduce individuals to the fascinating world of horology in an accessible and engaging way.

What to Expect at the Watchmaking Event

Mobile Watchmaking Classroom

AWCI's Build a Watch 2.0 includes a newly designed, in-house watch case, in stainless steel or PVD, your choice of 6 dials, and 6 different styles of hands, all taught in their state-of-the-art mobile classroom.

Under the direct supervision of AWCI-certified instructors, you'll delve into the fundamental principles of watchmaking, learning about:

  • The Movement: Understanding the heart of the watch and its various components.

  • Assembly Techniques: Precision handling and careful placement of delicate parts.

  • Troubleshooting: Gaining insight into common horological challenges.

This is your opportunity to assemble a Swiss Made ETA 6497 movement, lubricate the moving parts, install a dial and hands, and case up your very own watch before wearing it home!

This limited seat event is designed for all skill levels – whether you're a seasoned enthusiast with a collection of timepieces or someone who's simply curious about the inner workings of a watch, you'll find this experience both educational and immensely rewarding.
